Former NASCAR champion Bill Elliott was the star attraction at the ITT Industries Systems Division and Goulds Pumps Salute to the Troops 250 presented by Dodge NASCAR Busch Series race at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colorado on July 22, 2005. Elliott, who won NASCAR's Most Popular Driver Award a record 16 times, was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America on August 15, 2007.
In the Fall of 2005, Pikes Peak International Raceway was purchased by the International Speedway Corporation which closed the facility at the end of the 2005 season. Area fans must now travel about 585 miles to the nearest major track, Kansas Speedway in Kansas City.
The green flag is once again flying over Pikes Peak International Raceway three years after its closing and is now host to regional racing leagues. Visit www.ppir.com for their schedule of upcoming events.
